Key takeaways

Optimizing for AI search isn't a separate discipline from good SEO - it's the same fundamentals (clear structure, real depth, pages that connect to each other).

Content that's easy for a human to scan and trust is, almost by default, easy for an AI system to extract and cite. The two aren't in tension.

Build content in layers that feed each other on purpose - isolated pieces don't compound, connected systems do.

What the session covered

Same query, same intent, completely different outcome depending on where the answer shows up - the classic ten blue links, an AI Overview, or an LLM's answer. AI-powered search tools now answer the question directly before anyone reaches the site, so rankings can hold steady while clicks quietly drop.

So it's not just one shift - search behavior is changing faster than most content strategies can keep up with. Competitors are scaling into the same space, and a lot of existing content was never built to be surfaced or cited by AI in the first place.

At VertoTalks #24 Teodora Koleva walked through a real client case, and what we did to help them improve their AI search visibility, so they can show up where their audience is really looking.

Instead of focusing on individual pages, we rebuilt the client's content around four layers designed to work as one connected system:

  • Product Pages - rebuilt as real SEO assets, not afterthoughts
  • Taxonomy Pages - the interlinking hub tying everything together
  • Listicles - engineered to funnel traffic into taxonomy pages and products
  • Educational Blog Content - structured so AI search tools cite it, not just rank it

Each one was built to feed traffic into the next instead of competing with it. And connecting them is what actually moved both classic search and AI visibility.

One of the most useful moments came during Q&A, when someone asked how a small team is supposed to keep up with this. Teodora's answer was that you can't do everything, and prioritizing the handful of topics where you can build real authority beats spreading thin coverage across everything.

The bottom line: this isn't a separate AI-SEO discipline - it's what a good content system already looks like, and done right, it grows classic and AI-driven search visibility at the same time. If you want to see how this can play out in practice, we wrote up the full story in our Fontfabric case study.
